Hey there! 👋🏼
Today this is a short one, and I'm here to ask for your help.
I've been reading quite a lot about how to niche down my audience (yes, I mean you) and get you content that you really care about.
The first step here is to deliver a catchy and niche-specific headline.
My initial one was:
My goal is to teach every leader who is still starting their journey, what I learned late in mine.
Corny, I know, but it was my first attempt at this.
Audience: Every leader who's starting their journey.
Mission: Teach you the skills I've learnt throughout my time as a leader so you begin perfecting leadership skills earlier.
I intended to be broad, to connect with you and to showcase that I want to pass along the knowledge that took years to achieve and to improve. This way, you'll become a better leader faster.
I received feedback that the audience was extremely broad and the mission was vague. That I should be more specific on both. This would allow me to focus and better serve who's reading my posts or viewing my videos.
After thinking quite a bit about it, I niche down to the following:
I help Engineering Leads and Managers become better leaders through a culture of empowerment, feedback and accountability.
Audience: Leaders of Individual contributors.
Mission: Make you a better manager through a culture of empowerment, feedback and accountability.
This is an excellent way to zoom into a smaller audience where I can make a difference. It's with you that I work and coach every single day.
But not everything is roses.
I don't like the correlation between Leaders of Individual Contributors and Engineering Leads and Managers.
This duality is quite unsettling and confusing because, in my reality, Engineering Leads and Managers are two completely different things.
Engineering Lead: Leader of a team of Individual Contributors.
Engineering Manager: Leaders of a group of Engineering Leads.
Considering these two definitions, I'm sure you understand that the problems each one has, are entirely different.
The questions and expectations are different. Heck, even the ups and downs are not the same and not at the same time.
The reason I've added these two titles is that, after researching top companies like Google, Meta, Netflix, Spotify, FARFETCH, and Talkdesk, amongst others, there are the titles I've encountered for leaders of individual contributors:
Engineering Lead (or sometimes Team Lead)
Engineering Manager
And because I want to niche my audience down and start talking directly to you, I'm asking you to help me out with this poll:
Now, if you're wondering about the second part, I want to make you a better manager through a culture of empowerment, feedback and accountability.
Every week I create content here on the newsletter or LinkedIn that challenges you to become a better leader and professional.
If you want to dig a little bit deeper, I suggest these issues:
Parallel to this, I'm preparing a Leadership course dedicated to new leaders that want to strengthen their foundations. But I'll leave that to another issue.
For now, this is it from me today. Quick and simple.
Please fill out the poll above, and if you know other leaders of individual contributors, please share this issue. In this specific case, volume matters.
Thank you for helping me niching down my audience.
